The best laptop for working away from a desk
A month of trains, kitchen tables, and borrowed desks. 3 machines, and the winner is not the fastest one.

A laptop that never leaves a desk can be anything. One that works wherever you are has to survive a day without a plug, stay readable next to a window, and be light enough that you still bring it. We worked out of the house for a month on 3 of them to find out which holds up.
What actually decides it
- Battery measured in working hours, not the video playback figure on the box. Expect a little over half of what is printed.
- Weight with the charger in the bag, which is where a light machine with a heavy brick loses.
- A screen you can read at a window seat. Brightness beats resolution every time here.
- Ports, or the dongle you will forget. A machine that charges from either side is worth more than the spec sheet admits.
The one we kept reaching for
The MacBook Air 15. It is the rare big screen that does not cost you a bag, it ran 9 hours of real work with a call in the middle, and it stays silent because there is no fan to hear. Nothing here is the fastest machine you can buy, and after a month away from a desk that never came up once.
The 2 that win on their own terms
The Zenbook 14 OLED has the better screen and the ports, and asks for a charger sooner in return. Turn the refresh rate down and it gets most of an afternoon back. The iPad Air 11 with a keyboard is the lightest way to do a day of writing and email, as long as you accept it is a second computer rather than a smaller one.
Buy for the day you spend away from a desk, not for the number printed on the box.
