Is a 4K webcam worth it when nobody sees you in 4K
Every call you take compresses you down to a fraction of that. So why did the upgrade still look better?

No video call platform sends 4K. Most cap out around 1080p and drop below it the moment the network wobbles. So on paper, a 4K webcam is money spent on pixels nobody receives. In practice the upgrade was still obvious, for reasons that have nothing to do with resolution.
It is the sensor, not the pixel count
A bigger sensor gathers more light, and a video call is almost always taken in bad light. Downscaling 4K to 1080p also averages away noise, so the picture that arrives is cleaner than a native 1080p camera would send.
- Autofocus that actually holds on a face rather than hunting past it.
- Sensible color, so you stop looking slightly orange under a desk lamp.
- Room to crop. Framing yourself properly costs nothing when you started with 4 times the pixels.
Buy the camera for what it does to the light, not for the number on the box.
